Qualified Cannabis Worker

It’s a new year and like many people, you may be considering a lifestyle change. If you’re thinking about a new career in the Cannabis industry, we have some great advice for you, learn about becoming a qualified worker in the industry.

In Alberta, you must become an approved AGLC Qualified Cannabis Worker (QCW) to work in the Cannabis industry. If you are interested in working in the industry; start the process now, as there are several steps involved.

First, you must complete the SellSafe program. This is an online certification offered through AGLC’s Smart Training Program, SellSafe helps staff understand their responsibilities to their customers. The course costs $26.25, with taxes. It is said the course takes between 4 to 6 hours and up to 45 min for the test. Once registered, you will have 30 days to complete it.

During this time, it is advisable to request your criminal record check by going to your local police or RCMP station. The cost is $30 in the Calgary area and takes between 3 to 4 weeks to receive it by mail.

Once you have completed the above steps, you will need to complete the AGLC application form and submit it with the following:

  • A current, original criminal records check provided by local police or the local RCMP detachment. The AGLC does not accept photocopies, scans, faxes or third-party criminal records checks dated within the last three months. Unless you have already completed the “Personal Disclosure Cannabis.”
  • A copy of your birth certificate, Canadian passport or Indian status card. If you were not born in Canada, provide a copy of a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship or immigration documents, such as; a permanent resident card, landed immigrant document or current work/study permit.

The AGLC requires you to mail all the above documents to the St. Albert office for processing. It can take up to 2 to 4 weeks to receive your full qualification. The qualification is good for five years and you will need to renew it at that time. Although, this is Alberta specific qualification, it is entirely possible more provinces will put similar processes in place.

If you’re wondering how exactly you can enter the market; our best advice is to volunteer or work at any of the Cannabis Expos. Attend networking events in your area, as there are several groups in Alberta such as; Leaf Forward and Canexions.

Assess your transferable skills and determine what niche of the industry interests you. Start applying to these Cannabis businesses now as most are hiring currently.

A career in the Cannabis industry can be rewarding for those who enjoy helping others and for those brave enough to be part of this brand-new industry.
