#THEGATHERING2019
]]>At a recent ‘Women In Weed’ event, hosted by the Van der Pop group, there was lots of discussion around Cannabis use and parenting. In 2017 the group conducted a survey to understand the role Cannabis plays in the lives of women. This survey of over 1500 North American women resulted in some interesting facts about this topic.
As much as 66% of women, for example, hide their Cannabis use. Out of that group, 75% consider their consumption to be for medical purposes. Many of these women who were surveyed are also parents. It shares that as much as 89% of women are talking to their kids about Cannabis and 59% are open with their teens about their own usage.
A considerable percentage of these women, as much as 38%, also feel that consuming Cannabis helps them to be more patient and playful with their kids. Many of the women at the recent event agreed with this statement, saying that using Cannabis responsibly makes them better parents. They felt Cannabis consumption increases the quality of life for both themselves and their families. Some use a popular method called micro-dosing, which means taking small amounts of Cannabis as part of a daily health regime.
The parents at the event emphasized the importance of age-appropriate information and open communication as the most effective form of harm reduction. Furthermore, the Drug and Alcohol Dependence Volume 147 states in addition to general parenting practices, restrictive Cannabis-specific rules can lower the risk of adolescent Cannabis and other illicit drug use rates.
Parents agree it is important to educate kids about how Cannabis can be harmful if you use it before your brain has fully developed and to abstain until they are an adult. Another good learning tool to share with young people is by watching YouTube, from a reliable industry source. Also, being honest with your kids about Cannabis can help to destigmatize consumption overtime.
Many of the parents also discussed how they would prefer their teens experiment with Cannabis in a safe environment, such as at home with adult supervision. The survey also states that 46% of parents prefer their children to consume Cannabis over alcohol.

]]>Eating healthy can be even more challenging if you use Cannabis. It can be common to get the munchies after consuming Cannabis, as most people know. This effect is caused by two factors: The first factor is due to changes in hormone levels released by neurons in the hypothalamus, triggering hunger sensations. The second factor is that THC is said to contribute to an increased sense of smell, which can lead to increased appetite.
For some, getting the munchies is a desirable effect. For those who prefer to suppress appetite, there are a couple of things to consider when choosing a strain. Chose Cannabis strains that have high levels of Humulene because of its anorectic effects, meaning that this terpene can suppress hunger. Strains with a high level of this terpene are Stardawg 91 and Calyx OG as per the online Leafly directory. Tilray’s Pink Kush is another good option.
Another component to consider are strains high in the cannabinoid Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THC-V), which has a chemical structure similar to THC. This component produces a psychoactive effect but can suppress one’s appetite instead of stimulating it. Strains high in THCV are typically sativa, look for Pineapple Purps or Durban Poison. For maximum effects look for products that combine both Humulene and THCV, such as this Alberta strain known as Green Cush.
Relying on willpower alone is simply not enough. The best way to avoid an unplanned trip through the drive-through is by planning ahead and being prepared with healthy snacks that you enjoy.
Some snack ideas to consider:
It is possible to use Cannabis as a weight loss tool by avoiding strains that have a high THC level and by using products with both THCV and Humulene. If you still feel the urge to snack pick healthier options. As everyone’s experience with Cannabis is different, we recommend keeping a journal to record your progress to help determine what strains work best for you.
*Always get professional advice before starting a weight loss program.

]]>Did you know that Cannabis is considered to be an aphrodisiac? There are several ways both THC and CBD can increase pleasure and affect sexual performance. The components of Cannabis, particularly THC, increases sensitivity and can intensify orgasms. Sativa varieties are the most ideal for physical activity because of their uplifting effects and could enhance your evening with your partner.
The effects of Cannabis are caused by the stimulation of receptors located throughout the body. There are 2 types of receptors, these are called Cannabinoid Receptor 1 and 2 (CB1 & CB2). The CB2 receptor is found mainly in the immune system and in hematopoietic cells, the abdominal area has a large concentration of these receptors.
A woman’s estrogen levels are another factor which can affect sexual pleasure. The Van Der Pop Guide to Sex and Cannabis shares that pre-menopausal women can develop a general tolerance to THC and are more vulnerable to the negative side effects of Cannabis use. The opposite is true for postmenopausal women, who can maintain a stable dosage long-term.
Van Der Pop also states that not only can Cannabis cause ‘dry-mouth’ but it can also cause a something referred to as ‘cotton-vagina’, a term shared by Carlen Costa of The Everyday Goddess. This happens because the vaginal mucus can become dry for some women after consuming Cannabis. Advice from the experts is to use lubrication during intercourse, whatever type you prefer.
Some of the regulated producers are beginning to make Cannabis infused lube, such as; Foria Pleasure by Tweed. This product comes in both a CBD and THC formulation and claims to enhance tactile sensations while decreasing tension, discomfort and dryness. These oil-based Cannabis infused lubes will not get the user high, unless it is consumed.
It is also very easy to make infused lube at home, see this recipe from Leafly for directions. Always purchase your Cannabis from a regulated source to ensure that the product is free of pesticides, molds and other contaminants. Using regulated product makes it slightly easier to calculate potency too.
Cannabis consumption can also help women achieve better orgasms because THC and CBD work together to calm the mind and relieve body discomfort. Some other benefits include increased libido, self-awareness and might give a sensation of time slowing down. If you suffer from paranoia it is recommended to stay away from products with a high THC content to avoid this.
Some products have been created to alleviate menstrual discomfort, like these vaginal suppositories from Foria Relief. The suppositories come four in a box and are made with 100% organic-certified cocoa butter. Cannabis suppositories provide natural menstrual relief without the side-effects typical of ibuprofen or opioids.
There is a medical study taking place on the benefits of Cannabis-infused vaginal suppositories, looking at the effectiveness of Foria Relief to address pain and other menstrual symptoms. This observational study will be the first in the world to follow women using a medical Cannabis product that is already available in stores. The study will rely on self-reported results via an automated, secure medical questionnaire administered by Dr Gruber and her staff.
It is helpful to know that everyone experiences the effects of Cannabis differently. For some female friendly Cannabis worthy of experimenting with try Blue by Spectrum, Moon by Up Cannabis or CB Diesel by Maricann. It is best to start with a low dosage and to gradually increase until you’re happy with the effects.

]]>This dispensary is located in the fourth-largest population centre in Saskatchewan, with a reported population density of approximately 35,926 (2016). This small city’s economic growth is largely in thanks to cereal agriculture in the area and the establishment of Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1882. Like most cities, Moose Jaw has its own public library, museum and art gallery, swimming pools and other recreational facilities. It also has its own post-secondary institution, Saskatchewan Polytechnic.
This franchise location is owned and operated by members of the local community. They are the Fisher Family, from Saskatoon Saskatchewan. They took a moment to answer some brief questions for us about who they are and why they chose to open a Spiritleaf franchise. Their answers are below:
What is your background?
We are a Family of 4. Darcy Fisher is the father to Chelsea Dylan and Mandy. Darcy moved away from the Family farm in Unity SK at 16 years old to go to hairstyling school. 2 years later he entered entrepreneurship and opened his first salon. Eventually opening 5 Chatters salons with his sister Marlene. When Marlene and Darcy were ready to start retiring, they sold 4 locations and kept 1 to teach the younger generation how to run a business.
Most recently in partnership with their mentors; Chelsea, Dylan and Mandy opened a Tommy Guns Original Barbershop location in Saskatoon. Dylan came from a street paving and drilling rigs background, it was a big jump into the salon world! Mandy’s previous career experience is in service industry management. Chelsea has been doing hair since she learned how to use a pair of scissors. She is currently staying in Saskatoon with her 13-year-old son Haiden to operate the Fishers’ salons. Dylan and Mandy moved to Moose Jaw to co-manage daily operations of our first Cannabis store. Hopefully, in 6 years we’ll have Haiden out here too.
Where is your store located?
Civic Center Plaza
Unit 6-10 1251 Main Street N
Moose Jaw SK
Why did you choose to open a retail store-front?
When the federal government announced Cannabis will be legalized, we immediately knew that opening a dispensary was the next direction for our Family business. Our Family has been involved in Cannabis culture all of our lives and are passionate about spreading Cannabis education with a positive approach.
What attracted you to Spiritleaf?
Have you met Courtney?… We looked into every Cannabis franchise Canada had to offer. Spiritleaf was a clear choice for a multitude of reasons. We researched the management team and what the company had to boast. After reviewing all our potential opportunities, we contacted Spiritleaf. Once we got to meet the team at Spiritleaf Headquarters, it was a no-brainer. These people are who we want to work with.
Other interesting facts about you that the public should know?
Dylan knows how to juggle.

]]>Producer: Aurora Cannabis
Cost: Follow link for pricing.
Labeled as: THC 21.8 % and CBD 0 %
Species: Sativa
Rated 1 (low score) to 5 (high score)
Packaging/Weight: Rating this a 3.5. The product received weighed perfectly and was delivered quickly because of my proximity to the producer. However, the dried herb still comes in medium size plastic containers which are hard to transport day-to-day and was shipped in a large box which is not environmentally friendly.
Look: Rated a 4. The flowers are a medium green color with lots of dark orange pistols and had some visible crystals. The buds are hard and very compact. The product sent was trimmed well and the buds all varied in size.
Smell: Will rate the smell a 4. This product had a strong citrus scent which was fantastic! The main terpene present is nerolidol, which can also be found in orange trees called Neroli. This terpene may provide a mildly sedative effect and could also be antifungal. Linalool is the secondary terpene, which also has a citrus aroma. This terpene is also mildly sedative and could help to control anxiety.
Taste: Rating the taste a 4. The overall flavor of this strain was mild and fresh, with no chemical taste detected and was smooth when smoked in a joint.
Effects: Giving the effects a 4. I felt uplifted and mentally alert after consuming this product. After continued use, I did feel relief from some mild depression I had been experiencing (individual results will vary).
Comments: The genetics for this strain comes from a combination of Tangerine Dream and Sour Diesel, produced by DNA Genetics. Because of the species and terpene profile, this strain would be great for daytime use, with no negative mental effects. I enjoyed using this product and felt the medicinal effects were worth the cost.
Flowering: 9 to 10 weeks (indoors)

]]>As I shared before, consider having any electrical work done by a professional for safety and potential legal reasons. The security of the grow-op location and storage of the product should also be a priority. Most importantly, be sure you have an insurance policy that will cover damage done by a ‘legal’ grow operation; there are some so check around.
Once the Cannabis plants have reached two months, or two feet tall it is time to switch them to the final growth phase. The plants should be showing their sex at this time. Female plants will show sacks with feather-like stigmas shooting out. Remove and discard any male plants to avoid cross-pollination.
Read the previous article for instructions on how to get started. These next steps are for the flowering, or ‘bud’ phase through to harvesting using the deep-water culture method.
Step 1
Switch the lights cycle to 12 hours on and 12 hours off. This will indicate to the plants that the season is shorter and it is time to produce flowers.
*Currently using HID lamps, one is a 400-watt metal halide bulb and one is a 1000-watt high-pressure sodium bulb.
Step 2
Begin giving the plants blooming fertilizer, both A & B as directed by the manufacturer. The deep-water culture system being used has a 60-litre reservoir which is filled with tap water. Add fertilizer as directed and adjust the PH level to a maximum of 6.2. After draining the buckets completely empty the prepared water from the reservoir into the buckets. Once empty refill the reservoir with more tap water for the next watering. Because of the high levels of fertilizer being given to the plants, alternate feeding with PH ONLY water for one night to clean any unused minerals from buckets. Continue to rotate between fertilized water and PH only water to flush any buildup of minerals that the plants have not used.
Step 3
Once the plants have reached the last two weeks discontinue all fertilizer and use PH ONLY water until harvest; this flushes any remaining minerals out of the plants.
The best indicators the plants are ready for harvest is the look and smell. As per the Marijuana Horticulture bible, the resin glands (or trichomes) change to an amber colour. Harvest the plants before the trichomes have lost the round tops to avoid degradation. Use a magnifying glass to observe. The pistils (or hairs) will also be turning an orange or reddish colour. Finally, the smell can indicate the plants are ready. The aroma goes from a fresh green scent, like cut grass, to the recognizable skunk smell.
Step 4
Prepare your work area and line two large, shallow bins with parchment paper. Use food-safe gloves for convenience. You will also need clean scissors.
Step 5
Time to harvest! Begin trimming branches off the plant and discard all dead leaves. Remove the large fan leaves and place them in the first shallow bin. This is called the ‘B’ shake. Using scissors cut all the smaller leaves off the bud (or flower) and place trimmings in the second shallow bin. This is called the ‘A’ shake. Turn the shake regularly while drying to prevent mold. Handle the buds as little as possible to preserve the trichomes. Hang the branch with the bud still attached on a line or place in drying rack until dry to the touch.
Step 6
After the Cannabis flowers are dry to the touch, cut the individual buds off the branch and into a brown paper bag for a couple more days to redistribute moisture evenly. Once the material is fully dry, weigh your product before storing. Use clean glass jars to store product once cured and use humidity packs to control moisture. Store the dried shake in glass jars also.
Enjoy the benefits of growing your own Cannabis responsibility and stay lifted!

]]>Below are several examples of entry-level opportunities from store staff to consulting. There will be many different types of intermediate prospects which include for retailers to extraction experts. There are even many obscure sectors which will benefit such as tourism, cosmetic and beauty and horticulture.
Some entry-level prospects includes Cannabis concierge, security personnel and delivery drivers on site at a dispensary. There will be a need for labourers and harvesters at the licensed producer level. The emerging industry will require Cannabis specialists in real-estate and insurance. There are endless possibilities for many types of consulting for services including education, business development, patient services and so on.
Other sectors of industry will include dispensary retailers, wholesale or craft growers and product testing labs. More technical positions in the industry will include quality control or compliance officers and master growers for licensed producers. With concentrates being regulated for sale next year, there will be a high demand for extraction personnel.
Another interesting niche will be Cannabis themed weddings and floral arrangement, which is quickly gaining popularity. There are many opportunities for Cannabis themed tourism, including bus tours and ‘bud and breakfasts’. Another obscure sector is the growing need for Cannabis content writers and social media consulting with many online publications requiring specific talent.
Once regulated next year, infused beauty products will be an exciting sector of industry which will flourish, as this has historically been a profitable niche. There are many sectors involved in edible production at the facility level and for ongoing research and development. Edibles chefs are in high demand with infused dining events happening everywhere.
The Canadian government is allowing citizens to grow Cannabis for personal use (depending on the province), grow equipment sales and consulting will be another profitable way to participate in the industry, it has already become a very competitive sector. With many openings in advanced software technology, from growing applications and even transportation logistics.
With the dawn of a new industry, many individuals have been crossing over from standard industries, bringing with them transferable skills applied in a new way. There are endless opportunities in the Cannabis industry, with room for most entrepreneurs. The best advice is to reflect on your personal skills and interests and determine what sector suits your experience best. Attending the many expos and local networking events are imperative, be brave and don’t wait to pursue your dream!

]]>For the new-user:
Get the Cannabis newbie in your life a starter pack! Most packs will include rolling papers or pre-rolled cones, such as these from Elements. Some matches or lighter. A grinder, like this gold 4-part metal grinder, found Spiritleaf Shopify site. Doob tubes and a smell proof storage container are always a must. It is also a good idea to include some humidity packs, to keep the product fresh. Every start kit must include either a pipe or portable vape. It is also a good idea to include some cleaning wipes, to keep the new equipment in good condition. Finally, include a small ‘strain’ journal for new users to record their experiences.
There are many ‘best-of’ lists for vaporizers, everyone in the community has an opinion on this topic. In my experience, I think selecting a vaporizer is very personal. However, there are a few models that perform well and would make a great gift for most consumers.
The top three portable vaporizers include:
First, the Crafty dried-herb vaporizer by Storz & Bickel. In Canada, you can purchase it for anywhere between $369 to $420 CAN. This company also manufactures the Mighty, which is a more expensive version. It is reported to be easy to use and easy to clean, both of which are desirable features. The durable unit uses both convection and conduction heating, has a USB battery charger and fits in your pocket.
Then there is the PAX 3, which is another popular model and is quickly becoming a household name. This unit is dual-purpose and can be used for both dry herb and extracts. The complete kit will cost between $250 and $320 CAN. This model has extended battery life and heats up quickly. The PAX is discreet, stylish and comes in several different colors.
A more economical dried-herb model is the Reign by 3Kings, which is a Canadian owned manufacturer. This unit can cost as little as $100 to $130 CAN. It has a ceramic chamber, heats up quickly and is said to be the smallest model of its type in the world. The digital screen displays the battery power, temp setting, and a timer. The temperature setting is adjustable and the unit is charged with a USB cable.
The best stationary vaporizer:
The HerbalAire H3, which is also manufactured here in Canada. This unit will cost $269.95, direct from the supplier. This high-tech system is easy to use and allows you to vape two ways. You can inhale directly through the hose, which is connected to the unit. Or you can fill up the balloons, which are included in the kit. This design provides the best flavor because the air never passes through the coil, giving a good overall experience.
Cannabis-related books:
All Cannabis enthusiasts should have this book The Cannabis Manifesto: A New Paradigm for Wellness book, written by Steve DeAngelo and Willie L. Brown Jr., in their personal library. It is an important call to action about using Cannabis as a wellness catalyst that must be legalized.
For the Cannabis cook in your life get this Herb: Mastering the Art of Cooking with Cannabis, written by Melissa Parks and Laurie Wolf. Laurie, who was trained at The Culinary Institute of America has written four Cannabis related cookbooks. This book has over 200 pages of gorgeously illustrated recipes that elevate the art and science of cooking with Cannabis.
For the closet grower you know get them the Marijuana Horticulture: The Indoor/Outdoor Medical Grower’s Bible, written by Jorge Cervantes. Originally published in 1983, this handbook comes with 1120 full-color photographs and illustrations. This includes information on grow rooms, greenhouses and outdoor growing, medicinal cannabis, security, lighting, fertilizers, hydroponics, Sea of Green, seeds, seedlings, vegetative growth, mother plants, cloning, flowering, harvesting and curing, diseases, pests and hash making and so on.

Packaging/Weight: Home grown, n/a.
Look: Rated a 4. The buds are a very bright green, are completely covered in orange pistols and have many visible trichomes. Many of the buds were large and were very airy overall.
Smell: Will rate this a 3. The aroma was plain with no unique terpenes detected, however the strain smelled earthy and a little sweet overall. The smell increased slightly when it was ground up.
Taste: Rating this another 2.5. The flavor was clean with no chemical taste detected but was average with no distinct flavour.
Effects: Giving this category a 4. The effects of this strain were moderate for me with little-to-no brain fog. It did help to relieve some back pain I was experiencing. I had a noticeable increase in appetite after consuming this product (individual results will vary).
Comments: A version of this strain won first place in 1993 at the High Times Cannabis Cup and originally originated from the Netherlands. Although I didn’t enjoy the smell or taste, this strain was moderately medicinal and is ideal for daytime use.
Growing Notes: This auto-flowering strain is very easy to grow and is good for beginners. Flowering time is 8 weeks and is reported to produce an average yield of up to 8 ounces per plant indoors and 5 ounces outdoors.
This strain was grown indoors using deep water culture and under a 1000 watt HID light. The one (from five seeds) plant I grew took 12 man-hours to harvest and produced 11 ounces, which is higher than average. The buds were airy and not compact like the product description said. I also feel this strain was more of a hybrid as it grew short and wide, with small sativa-like leaves. I would grow this strain again for the high production and because it is so easy to grow.

]]>There are several factors to consider and understand before growing Cannabis for ‘personal use’. There are two options in Canada currently, depending on where you live you may be able to grow up to four plants for recreational purposes. The alternative would be to apply for the ACMPR program, with a medical Cannabis prescription.
Consider having all electrical work done by a professional, for both safety and potential legal reasons. The security of the grow-op location and storage of the product should also be a high priority. Most importantly, be sure you have an insurance policy that will cover damage done by a ‘legal’ grow operation; there are several, so do your homework.
There are several different methods which can be used for growing Cannabis with each having advantages and disadvantages. You can use plain dirt; it is the cheapest method but has the highest risk for contamination and bugs. There are also different inert mediums which can be use instead of dirt: Rockwool, perlite, vermiculite, coconut fiber, gravel, sand and so on. These mediums produce better yields then plain dirt would but require special fertilizers. Some other methods include hydroponic, deep water culture and aeroponics. These methods are often more costly and are labour intensive but produce bigger yields.
These steps below are basic instructions on getting your Cannabis plants started through the first phase of growth, using Rockwool as the substrate. First things first, you must sex your seeds. Why? Because you don’t need to waste valuable effort and money on plants that won’t produce flowers and could accidentally pollinate your crop. YouTube is a great source to check for more detailed information.
Step 1
Begin by soaking the Cannabis seeds in tap water with a PH level of 5.8 – 6.2 to germinate and at temperatures of 75-80 F.
Germination should take 1 to 3 days, sometimes more. Then store in a dark, warm place above the fridge or on a heating mat. Discard any seeds that haven’t sprouted.
Step 2
While seeds germinate, soak the Rockwool grow cubes in tap water with a PH level of 5.8 – 6.2.
Then squeeze excess water, ensuring cubes are not too damp. Place cubes on the heating mat for 24 -72 hours until it reaches temperatures of 75-80 F, then remove mat.
Step 3
Once Cannabis seeds have sprouted, make a small hole in the Rockwool cubes. I use the small end of a chopstick.
Very carefully place the seed root down into the depression and gently pack in the sides to secure it.
Place in a dome covered seedling tray, under T5 fluorescent lights, on a schedule of 18 hours on and 6 hours off.
Check each cube frequently so they do not dry out but be careful not to over water either.
Increase the PH level to 6.2 to improve fertilizer uptake from plants.
Don’t fertilize until the fourth set of leaves develop.
Remove any delinquent or mutated plants that develop.
Step 4
Prepare the grow room or greenhouse as required.
If using Hydroponic growing, prepare the lava stones by sterilizing them in boiling water.
I prefer to use deep water culture, as there are less equipment concerns.
Step 5
After the fourth set of leaves have developed, begin giving plants fertilizer, mixed with tap water PH of 6.2
For the first watering use only a quarter strength of manufacturers recommendations, increase gradually until the next phase.
Plants are ready to be put into buckets.
The Cannabis plants remain in the vegetative growth stage for two months or until they reach two feet tall, whichever happens first.
Running lights 18 hours on 6 hours off. Using tap water with a PH level of 6.2, fertilize as directed by manufacturers. Check PH levels regularly.
Make sure you know all the rules for growing and always work safely.
Check back soon for the next installment about flowering and harvest!

A bong, which is also called a water pipe, is a filtration device generally used for smoking Cannabis, tobacco, or other herbal substances. Bongs have been in use since the 16th century and were first introduced by the Ming Dynasty in China. In India, the hookah was also used to vaporize or smoke flavored tobacco or Cannabis as far back as the 1560’s.
The main purpose of a bong is to enhance the user’s experience by cooling down the inhaled smoke. This method also filters out heavier particles and water-soluble molecules, preventing things like tar from entering the smoker’s airways. These devices come in all sizes and are made from many different types of materials such as glass, plastic, wood, clay, bamboo and ceramics.
The bong itself is made up of a handful of parts and includes the bowl, which is where the herb is combusted. It can sometimes have a carb hole, this is used to clear excess smoke from the chamber. Then there’s the base, which is where the water or liquid is added. Finally, the tube and mouthpiece which is where to smoke fills up and the user inhales.
New advancements in consumption have led to many fun and unique methods. There are several alternatives to using just plain water in your bong. These options include cold or warm tea, infused water, cranberry juice, soda pop and even wine with a low alcohol content. Some more outrageous options include hot sauce and mouthwash, which sound dreadful to me.
Another method which is worth sharing uses liquefied, cold pressed coconut oil instead of the traditional plain water. This method could potentially increase the effects of THC because of the high-fat content present. This medium will also help to keep your bong clean! In a recent article from VICE, water sommelier Martin Reise recommends chilled Fiji water to cool down the smoke and for a smooth texture giving the Cannabis flower a crisp and clean taste.
Spiritleaf wants to know if you are the kind of consumer who likes to use traditional, plain water in your bong or do you like to walk on the wild side? Have you tried any of these alternatives? If so, tell us on social media!

1) For those who might not know you, give us an idea of what you do?
My name is Matt Canta, I am a pipe maker from Calgary, Alberta. The title says it all, I make pipes and other cannabis-related items out of borosilicate glass.
2) In your own words describe what a ‘heady’ glass artist is to you?
The term ‘heady’ means that something really grasps a part of who you are and connects with you, so heady can be different in everyone’s eyes. In my eyes, a ‘heady’ artist is someone who can incorporate many different styles and techniques into their work. Where some of your production work will take on average about an hour per piece, headies takes on average 10 plus hours.
3) Tell us how you got started glassblowing and how it evolved into being your full-time career?
I found lampworking through a documentary called “Degenerate Art: The art and culture of glass pipes” made by the legendary artist Slinger. Once I saw that there were guys out there literally making whatever they could come up with, I knew that I had to at least try it. After the first time I stuck a piece of glass into a flame I knew then and there that I wanted to do whatever it took to become a lampworker.
I ended up working for a local shop for almost 2 years where I soaked up as much knowledge about glass as I could, and 3 years ago I quit that job and took the leap. The rest is pretty boring, just a lot of time spent in my garage breaking stuff until I figured it out.
4) Where do you look for inspiration? Are there influencers who drive your creativity?
I try to find inspiration anywhere that I can. I have always had a love for the traditional Venetian shapes of glassware, so I have always tried to make sure that all of my work has a nice “flow” to each piece.
Honestly, my biggest influencers are my friends and my collectors. The glass community in Canada is very tight-knit and I am stoked to be able to call so many other talented artists my friends. Seeing your friends make something really amazing normally turns into a little self-challenge to improve your own work. My collectors are literally the reason I am able to do something I love every single day. Without the shops and private collectors who buy my work, there would be no Era Glassworks.
5) What challenges and barriers do artists, like yourself, in the Cannabis industry face? What advice would you give to new artists interested in this field?
Besides the time and effort you need to put in to learn the craft, one of the more difficult things is making a name for yourself when you’re starting out. There are more and more people wanting to blow glass every day. So you need to find a way to make yourself stand out from the crowd. Just remember, there will always be somebody better than you in anything. Don’t let that stop you, let that drive you to be a better you.
6) What is your favorite method of consumption and why?
I prefer to dab. I find concentrates have a much nicer effect and less of a burnout than smoking flowers.
7) If you could collaborate with any heady artist, who would it be and why?
Hmm, that’s a tough one. I have already had the opportunity to work with so many artists I could never have dreamed of working with. One artist I would love to be able to collaborate with again would be Aaron Culbert.
I met Aaron about a year before I started working in the industry. He was the first pipe maker I had ever met in person, and over the years we became friends. I had the opportunity to hang out with him a couple summers back and was honoured to have Aaron put one of my marbles on one of his famed “Dutchie” recyclers. I feel like if we met up today and made a piece together it would end up being my favourite collaboration to date.
8) Recreational Cannabis use will be legal in Canada later this year, how do you think this will affect your business in the future? Do you have plans to expand your operations and online presence?
I hope legalization brings new opportunities for myself and all the other artists alike. I will always continue to grow my online presence and business across Canada. I will always remain a solo operation though. As long as I can keep making pipes and feed myself I will be happy.
See more of Matt’s work here and on his Instagram!

]]>“We are really excited to be sharing Spiritleaf,” said store owner Jayne Kent. “It is such a beautiful space and the products are really great.”
Spiritleaf, a franchise based out of Calgary, is one of two cannabis retailers expected to open in St. Albert this month. The store, #107, 150 Bellerose Drive, has plans to turn the key for customers next week.

]]>Originally from Vancouver Island, Timewarp (or Texada Timewarp) is a descendant from a Canadian landrace hybrid that is mostly Sativa. This strain is a result of a cross breed of genetics from Jordan of the Islands, BC Bud Depot and the Next Generation Seed Company. It typically has a moderate amount of THC of (17%) with little to no CBD. The main terpenes in this strain are Limonene and Pinene. It produces a lighter calming body effect with an uplifting cerebral high. Timewarp can help to control mild pain, anxiety, stress and depression and is recommended for daytime use.
Alberta has its own local strain known as Green Cush, more commonly known as Green Crack, bred in Pincher Creek in the 1980’s. This strain is sativa-dominant with genetics linking it to Skunk #1 and an Afghani strain. It has a high amount of THC, usually over 20%. The buds are often compact with burnt orange hairs or pistols. Some of the main terpenes include Ocimenes and Myrcene, giving it a sweet and spicy aroma. This strain is excellent for controlling pain and can help to relax muscles.
Blue Crinkle is another Canadian strain, originating from Ontario. It is an Indica dominate strain and has a moderate to high level of THC, at approximately 17% or more. Little information is known about the history of this strain; it reportedly has a sweet, berry scent. It can be beneficial for treating chronic pain, insomnia, anxiety, stress and depression. This local strain is recommended for evening use.
Jean-Guy, which is a strain bred in Quebéc, is said to be a phenotype of White Widow. It was made famous by the Montreal Compassion Club but gained popularity when it was featured in the first ever Cannabis advertisement in the New York Times. This strain is a Hybrid, with as much as 90% Sativa and has a high THC content reaching up to 25%. It has a sweet and sour aroma and provides an energizing and uplifting experience. It can be a reputable source of relief for fibromyalgia and cancer symptoms but is NOT recommended for those who suffer from anxiety because of its intense cerebral effect.
There are potentially millions of different varieties of Cannabis strains being cultivated at this time and choosing one is personal. Some individuals choose strains simply based on the THC or CBD level, some for the terpene profile and some choose strains because of their origin and reputation. Keeping track in a ‘strain diary’ is an easy way to narrow down which strains are right for you. Everyone experiences each strain in a unique way and it is always best to start low and go slow.

]]>The Spiritleaf cannabis retail store located at number 300 Old Canmore Road has just started construction.
The interior of the new Spiritleaf store will feature an open space that reimagines the typical retail environment of a dispensary, with contemporary motifs.
Legalization will bring some expected challenges but also some deserved benefits. The most obvious benefit is that Canadian citizens will have reasonable access to legal, regulated Cannabis products. In some municipalities, individuals will be able to publicly consume Cannabis in designated areas and some will also be allowed to grow a maximum of four plants per household.
Until recently ‘drug paraphernalia’ was illegal to import, export, manufacture, promote, or to sell. Bill C-45 addressed this issue by re-defining a ‘Cannabis accessory’ as ‘rolling papers or wraps, holders, pipes, water pipes, bongs and vaporizers’. This law makes paraphernalia legal in Canada but still restricted, this is a minor change to legislation with potentially big impacts.
Legalization will also make it possible for scientific research in Canada, which will help legitimize the use of Cannabis as a treatment for any medical condition. Canada has a unique opportunity to investigate the potential therapeutic benefits of medical Cannabis, potentially setting a global precedence. Research will help increase popular support of Cannabis use both medical and recreational users. It is also the key to mitigate negative stereotypes and to eliminate the stigma associated with consumption.
Another obvious benefit of legalization is job creation, in many sectors of industry. The U.S. Cannabis industry is now reported to be employing an estimated 100,000 to 150,000 workers as of 2016. Sectors include retailers, wholesale grows, infused products and concentrates companies, testing labs and so on. The emerging industry will also include everything from security and insurance, to compliance, there are also endless possibilities for consulting. It will be really exciting to see what new sectors evolve after legalization!
Advertising regulations in Canada are strict but promoting content on social media is even more difficult. Most social platforms are US based and Cannabis is still illegal there, federally speaking. These platforms do not allow this ‘type’ of content and even ban some related hashtags. Earlier this year, YouTube deleted several well-established Cannabis channels due to the violations of their ‘community guidelines’. In the past, Google Maps has declined to add dispensaries, even though some states in the US have legalized Cannabis. This is slowly beginning to change, as Cannabis becomes more normalized.
Some hard-core advocates in the community say the Cannabis Act isn’t legalization, because of the current advertising restrictions and lack of regulations for topicals, edibles and concentrates. Some other reasons include the lack of consumption lounges and the restriction on public consumption in some municipalities. The biggest concern for experienced users are the new drugged-driving laws, which are unreasonably strict and have serious consequences.
Some of these advocates also feel no one should be allowed to profit from this emerging industry, but how else will Cannabis become legitimate if there is no regulated market? There are some individuals in the community who choose to remain optimistic about the progress, which should not be mistaken for ignorance. Nothing good happens overnight, particularly when the government is involved. In time, Colorado resolved many of these same issues, recently implementing their first Cannabis lounge earlier this last year. The Cannabis Act istechnically legalization and while it may not be perfect it is the framework of our future industry. Regardless, the future looks green for those in the Cannabis community and industry here in Canada.
This quote sums it up-
“Progress on this journey often comes in small increments. Sometimes two steps forward, one step back, compelled by the persistent effort of dedicated citizens. And then sometimes there are days like this when that slow, steady effort is rewarded with justice that arrives like a thunderbolt.”
— Barack Obama, Time.com
This social change is a direct result of many advocates and medical patients who paved the way over many decades, we thank you!

]]>For over a decade medial Cannabis has been delivered to patient’s homes through Canada Post or other courier services. The recreational market will also utilize home delivery, putting an increased demand on these services. It will require additional staff and vehicles, which will create more emissions and so on. This is potentially good for the economy with some unintentional environmental consequences.
Energy and water consumption is another consideration effecting Cannabis producers and is one of the highest expenditures in a cultivation operation. Some of these facilities are very large and the demand is equally so. It might be a requirement for the provincial governments to expand their energy and water facilities to accommodate the industry. Again, this will be great for job creation but will use a lot of agriculture space and utilities.
Being able to quantify the economic and environmental impacts will be critical to evolving the industry and separating the strong competitors from the rest. Using baseline data to establish average energy costs per square foot, per gram of product and determining a facilities carbon footprint will be required to identify areas of improvement. This will help to create best practices within the industry.
Another less obvious sector that will be affected by legalization is the real-estate market. On one hand, it will create a demand of otherwise idle commercial properties for production purposes, reinvigorating local communities in some cases. On the other hand, there will be some residential properties that might become undesirable to the average market. This is because some municipalities will allow personal grow operations, most are safe but some could potentially cause damage to the property.
Some advocates in the Cannabis community say the strain on the health care system will decrease as the general public begins to use Cannabis as an alternative. This remains to be seen. However, the National Center for Biotechnology Information shared that the increase in availability led to an increase in health care utilization related to Cannabis exposure. An increase of incidences evolving burns, cyclic vomiting syndrome and health care visits due to ingestion of edible products were reported.
With legalization happening late this year in Canada, it will be interesting to see how these infrastructure concerns are addressed over the next decade. No matter what, all solutions will be in reaction to this new legislation.

]]>Here in Calgary, the past attitude of the local authorities was somewhat relaxed when it came to Cannabis offences compared to other conservative communities. Officers admit they have been working under an unofficial decriminalization capacity for many years and in most cases, only laying drug charges when necessary and were rarely stand-alone charges. The impression is that Cannabis offences were a low priority previously.
Despite local authorities’ approach, arrests for Cannabis have occurred. There are many Canadians who now have a criminal record and are serving time. Once legalization occurs later this year there potentially may be reclassifications or pardons for previous Cannabis offences. This will lessen the burden on the court system and will allow those individuals to then participate in the industry.
California’s new legislation included both reclassified or expunged for those with Cannabis offences. It also allows those currently serving sentences the opportunity for re-sentencing. Oregon also passed a resolution in 2015 allowing Cannabis offences to be expunged. The opposite is true for those in Washington and Colorado, where the legalisation has become more severe in some cases.
The Stanford Open Policing Project 2018 reports that after Cannabis consumption was legalized, Colorado and Washington did see a dramatic drop in overall ‘search’ rates. It is time for Canada to adopt an atmosphere of non-criminality, to stop arrests and expunge existing criminal records for Cannabis possession. It is important the laws reflect the values of its citizens.
One intention of legalization is to displace the black market with a regulated, legal market. However, authorities in Calgary admit there have already been representatives of ‘the cartel’ coming to Canada to infiltrate the legitimate market, ahead of legalization. This is an unavoidable consequence which is offset by a possible reduction in the low-level street dealers. It will be up to the municipalities to screen these individuals as much as possible to avoid too much saturation.
It will be every individual’s responsibility to be aware of local and federal laws surrounding the use of recreational Cannabis. The minimum age for consumption, where to find legal sources, where you can consume it, how much product you can possess at one time and intoxication limits for driving are some things to consider. Legalization will have many advantages and disadvantages. The process will take time before the long-term legislation is more realistic.
